Photovoltaic plants

In 2009, at the age of 24, soon after completing the bachelor in electrical engineering, I registered a craft company, designed and installed twelve grid-connected photovoltaic plants in one year. Read my story below.

Photovoltaic plant 1.45 kW , with solar tracking
November 2006 – January 2007

The first plant I made, in 2007, was probably the first one in Italy to employ a solar tracking system on a sloped tiles roof. I made a youtube video and some description on my website which received a lot of attention. I was invited to present it in a conference for professionals in Cagliari, and I described my design in the book “Solar photovoltaic systems” edited by Maggioli, which sold about 10,000 copies in the period 2010-2013.

For that 1.45 kW plant (at that time, 2005, PV panel cost was 8 €/W, now 0.5 €/W) I had designed and made the Sun tracking electronic control system myself, etching the PCB at home and housing the home made Sun direction sensor in a marmalade jar.

Several people wanted to make a solar tracking PV plant, and I supplied tens of electronic boards to control the motors of various solar trackers. I still make control systems for solar trackers, which evolved significantly since then. I am proud to know from early adopters that early prototypes are still working fine after 8 years in the field.

My photovoltaic plants are all working and feeding clean electricity in the electric network.

What I took care of:

  • Design of the electrical system and support structure.
  • Permitting, documentation to request grid connection.
  • Purchase of all components.
  • Contracting suppliers for foundation works, crane, transport.
  • Planning, execution and coordination of the installation work, with two employees.
  • Conformity Test and Declaration of Conformity of the electric installation.
  • GSE documentation to secure feed in tariff.
